Urbanism

Dutch artists Haas&Hahn (Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn) are the duo behind many of these stunning projects and, for those of you in New York, you have the chance to check out their exhibition at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. The exhibition will showcase paintings, documentary footage, pictures, sketches and plans of past, present and future projects.

It's awesome to see how these artists use their abilities on whole buildings. The painting of these buildings can change the whole mood of a place from boring to exciting just with colors.

  2. Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn started a project aimed at creating change using art, creativity and color. Five years ago, this dream took them to Brazil, where they started making huge artworks in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

The designer artists are now world famous for their Favela painting project, attracting positive attention by bringing color to these grey neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro.

  3. I'm a fan at artists' representation of cities and how capturing the essence of that place is shown in their paintings.

I love Portuguese city artwork. I've been many times and every time I see a piece of artwork of a backstreet in the heart of Lisboa, it takes me back to the times I've been and experienced that city.

Here's a link to some of the paintings:

  4. It is always so refreshing to see street projects and "graffiti" appreciated as true forms of contemporary art. I think my two favorite things about this forum are 1) It shares a different side of aesthetic creativity; one that is more down to earth and representative of the masses and 2) Because it is done in public settings it can be appreciated by everyone at any time.
One artist that I'm sure many are familiar with already is Banksy (in fact, I see that one of his works is the picture on the homepage of this blog). His true identity is unknown but his style is recognizably distinguishable. He often makes intentional bold social statements with his simple stencils and patterns making his art not only beautiful but thought provoking. He truly utilizes the exposure of the urban setting to his advantage. Photographs of his work in the UK and all over the world can be seen here:

  5. These artists' work is fantastic! It's extremely reminiscent of the "Let's Colour Project" which encourages and implements street art like this all across the world. Here are some pictures of the movement in action. Though the Haas&Hahn's works with the illustrations are particularly captivating, the simple addition of even just blocks of color can completely change the atmosphere of the environment. Seems like these two groups should really team up...and come to America too!
