ReplyDeleteAlong with inner cities and cinema and somewhat related to a previous reading, "Tao of Urbanism: Integrating Observation with Action," the movie "Freedom Writers," depicts a teacher, Erin Gruwell, who almost transforms into a community leader. Based on a true story which took place at Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA, Freedom Writers is an inspirational movie about at-risk youth creating a means for themselves in an urban education system which does little to support their success. Inner city education is of the less beautiful side of a city.
Below is an excerpt from a Freedom Writers Foundation webpage that introduces the environment this teacher entered:
"A recent college graduate, Erin landed her first job in Room 203, only to discover many of her students had been written off by the education system and deemed “unteachable.” As teenagers living in a racially divided urban community, they were already hardened by first-hand exposure to gang violence, juvenile detention, and drugs."
This clip from TeacherTube is a scene from the movie, "Toast For Change," where students start off a new semester with change, growth, and progress in mind--silencing any voice "that said they couldn't."
